American Bully Training Tips — Training a Strong Breed

Written by BreedersBreeding Since 2015Sedona, Arizona

American Bully training is easier than the breed's reputation suggests and more important than its temperament implies. These dogs are eager, food-motivated and genuinely want to please. But they are also strong enough that a 100-pound adult with no lead manners is a real problem regardless of how friendly it is. See our temperament guide.

The Socialisation Window: Weeks 8 to 16

This is the highest-value period in the entire dog's life and it does not come back. What a puppy meets calmly between eight and sixteen weeks shapes how it responds to those things for a decade.

Aim for wide, calm exposure, not overwhelming, just varied:

  • People of different ages, appearances and heights, especially children
  • Calm, vaccinated adult dogs, quality over quantity
  • Traffic, bicycles, buggies, wheelie bins, umbrellas
  • Different surfaces: grass, gravel, metal, tiles, stairs
  • Handling: paws, ears, mouth, tail. Do this daily, it makes vet visits easy for life
  • Being alone for short periods, deliberately practised

That last one matters more in this breed than any other. Attachment is the American Bully's defining trait and its weakest point. A puppy that is never left alone becomes an adult that cannot be.

Lead Manners: Start Before It Matters

A 15 lb puppy that pulls is charming. The same dog at 110 lbs is dangerous to an older or smaller handler. Fix it in month three, not month eighteen.

  • Use a well-fitted harness: a neck-only collar on a strong puller risks the trachea
  • Stop when the lead tightens. Every time, without exception. Pulling must never move the dog forward
  • Reward the position you want: mark and treat whenever the dog is beside you with slack in the lead
  • Change direction when the dog forges ahead; it teaches attention
  • Practise indoors first, where nothing competes for attention

House Training

Out first thing, after every meal, after every nap, after play, and last thing at night. Reward outdoors immediately, within two seconds. Never punish an accident indoors. It teaches the dog to hide, not to hold.

Crate training helps and is worth doing properly: the crate should be a good place the dog chooses, never a punishment. Most bullies are reliable by four to five months. A winter puppy takes longer for the obvious reason.

Bite Inhibition

Puppy mouthing is normal and it needs redirecting rather than punishing. When teeth touch skin, yelp, stop the interaction and offer a toy. Twenty seconds of withdrawn attention teaches it faster than any correction.

Get this right early. A dog with good bite inhibition that is startled at six years old grabs without damage; one without it does not.

The Realistic Timeline

AgeFocus
8–16 weeksSocialisation, name, sit, crate, alone-time practice
4–6 monthsLead manners, recall in a safe space, handling
6–12 monthsProofing around distractions; adolescence hits, expect regression
12–24 monthsConsolidation. Reliability arrives here, not before

Adolescence between roughly eight and eighteen months is when previously perfect recall evaporates. It is normal, it passes, and the answer is more practice rather than more pressure.

Because of their strength, a group class is worth the money for this breed even if you have trained dogs before. See are American Bullies dangerous? for context on why good handling matters publicly as well as privately.

FAQ

American Bully Training Tips — Frequently Asked Questions

Are American Bullies easy to train?

Moderately. Eager and food-motivated, but stubborn when bored. Short frequent sessions with food rewards work well. Harsh correction is counterproductive; this is a softer-natured breed than it looks.

When should I start training my American Bully?

The day it comes home, at eight weeks. The socialisation window between eight and sixteen weeks is the highest-value period in the dog's life and it does not come back.

How do I stop my American Bully pulling on the lead?

Stop moving every time the lead tightens, without exception, and reward the position you want. Use a well-fitted harness. Fix it while the dog weighs 20 lbs, not 110.

Do American Bullies need professional training?

Not necessarily, but a group class is worth it for the socialisation alone. Given the adult strength, having a trainer check your handling early is money well spent.
