Why Choose a Merle American Bully
Merle is a pattern, not a color. The M locus dilutes patches of an existing base coat, leaving mottled lighter areas over the dog's underlying blue, chocolate or lilac. That is why a merle is always described as a merle of something. Blue merle, chocolate merle, lilac merle — rather than merle on its own.
It is also the pattern that produces the most striking dogs in the breed, and demand reflects that. Most kennels charge a substantial premium for it. We do not. Every puppy in our litter is the same price whether it is a merle or a solid, because the cost of raising it is identical.

Merle American Bully Genetics: What Buyers Should Know
This section matters more than anything else on the page. Merle is a dominant gene, and a dog needs only one copy (Mm) to show the pattern. A single-merle dog is a normal, healthy dog.
Breeding two merles together gives each puppy a 25% chance of inheriting two copies (MM), a double merle. Double merles are frequently born deaf, blind, or both, and often carry eye malformations. This is well established, it is entirely predictable, and it is avoidable by never pairing two merles.
We do not breed merle to merle. Every merle puppy on this page came from one merle parent and one non-merle parent, which produces healthy merles with zero risk of a double merle in the litter. Any breeder who cannot tell you the merle status of both parents should not be selling you a merle puppy.
| Pairing | Merle puppies | Double merle risk | Responsible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merle × non-merle | ~50% | None | Yes. This is what we do |
| Merle × merle | ~75% | ~25% of the litter | No |
| Merle × cryptic merle | Variable | Present, and unpredictable | No — test first |
Cryptic merle, the hidden risk
A cryptic (or phantom) merle carries the gene but shows little or no visible pattern, sometimes just a small patch behind an ear. Bred to a visible merle it can produce double merles from a pairing that looked perfectly safe. DNA testing is the only way to rule it out, and it is one of the reasons pedigree documentation matters.
Merle coat and eye color
| Merle type | Base coat | Nose | Common eye color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue merle | Blue/grey | Grey or blue-grey | Amber, blue, or one of each |
| Chocolate merle | Chocolate brown | Brown/liver | Amber to light hazel |
| Lilac merle | Lilac (double dilute) | Pinkish-grey | Light amber, blue, green-hazel |
| Merle tri | Base + tan points | Matches base | Amber or blue |
Odd-colored or partially blue eyes are common in merles and are not in themselves a health concern in a single merle. More detail in our American Bully color genetics chart.

Merle American Bully For Sale — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a merle American Bully?
An American Bully carrying the merle gene at the M locus, which dilutes random patches of the base coat into a lighter, mottled pattern. The dog underneath is still blue, chocolate or lilac. Merle is the pattern laid over it.
Are merle American Bullies rare?
Less rare than they were, but still a minority of any litter and consistently the most requested pattern. Rarity is why most kennels charge a premium. We do not, every puppy here is the same price.
Is merle a health risk?
A single merle is a healthy, normal dog. The risk is exclusively in double merles, produced by breeding two merle parents together, which commonly causes deafness and blindness. It is entirely avoidable and we avoid it, we never pair two merles. Ask any breeder for the merle status of both parents before you buy.
Do merle puppies cost more here?
No. Every puppy in our litter is the same price regardless of coat. Charging double for a pattern that costs nothing extra to produce has always struck us as hard to justify.
