Why Choose a Blue American Bully
Blue is the signature coat of the American Bully. It is not really blue. It is a diluted black, giving a slate grey that reads blue in daylight, usually with a matching grey nose and amber or light hazel eyes. "Blue nose" is not a bloodline or a type, despite how often it is sold as one; it is simply what a blue dog's nose looks like.
Genetically, blue comes from two copies of the recessive d allele at the D locus acting on a black base. Because it is recessive, two blue parents always produce blue puppies. Which is why the color is common enough to be affordable and consistent enough to be predictable.
Blue is also the foundation of several of the most in-demand coats: merle American Bully for sale in its blue merle form, and tri color American Bully puppies as blue tri.

What Makes an American Bully Blue
One gene does the work. The D locus controls dilution; two copies of the recessive form lighten black pigment to grey throughout the coat, nose, paw pads and eye rims.
| Base coat | D locus genotype | Result | Nose color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black | D/D or D/d | Black | Black |
| Black | d/d | Blue | Grey / blue-grey |
| Chocolate | D/D or D/d | Chocolate | Brown / liver |
| Chocolate | d/d | Lilac | Pinkish-grey |

Color dilution alopecia, the one thing to know
Dilute coats carry a slightly raised risk of color dilution alopecia, a genetic condition causing patchy hair loss and dry, flaky skin, usually appearing between six months and three years. It is manageable and not life-threatening, but it is worth knowing about before you buy a dilute dog of any kind. It is not universal and good breeding reduces it. Our skin problems guide covers management, and the colors guide explains every American Bully color in full.

Blue American Bully For Sale — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a blue nose American Bully?
Just a blue-coated bully. The grey nose comes with the dilute coat. It is not a bloodline, a type or anything rare, despite being marketed that way constantly. If someone is charging you a premium for "blue nose", they are charging you for a description of the dog's nose.
Are blue American Bullies rare?
No. Blue is one of the most common coats in the breed, which is exactly why it is a sensible choice. The dilution gene is recessive and widespread, so two blue parents reliably produce blue puppies.
Do blue bullies have skin problems?
Dilute coats carry a slightly elevated risk of color dilution alopecia. Patchy hair loss and dry skin, usually appearing between six months and three years. It is cosmetic and manageable rather than dangerous, and it does not affect most blue dogs. See our skin problems guide.
