XL is the class most people are searching this price band for, and it is achievable, but with a caveat. XL puppies cost more to raise: bigger litters eat more, caesarean rates are higher, and the vet bills scale with the dog. A breeder offering XL well under $1,000 is either running a very lean operation or skipping something.

Red Flags When Buying Under $1000

The sub-$1,000 band attracts the most fraud of any price point, because it is high enough to be worth a scammer's time and low enough that buyers do not scrutinise it the way they would a $4,000 dog.

• They will not send a dated video. Ask for thirty seconds of the puppy with its mother, recorded that day with your name written on paper in shot. A refusal means there is no mother to film.
• The price drops when you hesitate. Real breeders have waiting lists and do not negotiate against themselves.
• Payment by gift card, crypto or wire only. Every one of these is irreversible, which is the entire point of asking for them.
• Shipping costs appear after the deposit. The classic puppy scam: a deposit, then a crate fee, then insurance, then a customs charge.
• Stock photography. Reverse image search the photos before you send anything.
• No address, no landline, no kennel name. A real program has a location you could drive to.
• "Papers are being processed." They are not.

What Should Be Included at Any Price

This list does not change with the price. A $700 puppy and a $7,000 puppy should both arrive with all of it:

• Health screening on both parents: hips, elbows and cardiac, with records you can actually see
• Age-appropriate vaccinations, given on schedule and documented
• A completed deworming course, not one that was started
• A veterinary health certificate dated within days of collection
• A written health guarantee you can read before you pay
• Pedigree paperwork naming both parents and their ancestors
• A contract setting out what happens if something goes wrong
• A breeder who takes the dog back at any point in its life

If any of it is missing, the price is not actually what you were quoted. You are paying the difference later, at your own vet.

How to Verify a Breeder

Four questions, and all four should get an immediate, specific answer:

1. "Can I see the parents on video, right now?" A live call showing both parents and the litter costs the breeder nothing. Hesitation here is the single most reliable signal there is.
2. "What health screening did the parents have, and can I see the records?" The answer should name hips, elbows and cardiac, and the records should follow within the hour.
3. "Who is the sire and how many litters has the dam had?" A real breeder answers instantly. A re-seller does not know.
4. "What happens if I cannot keep the dog in three years?" The right answer is "bring it back to me."
