Why This Breed Attracts Bad Actors

Popular, expensive, and with no meaningful gatekeeping. Anyone with two dogs can produce a litter and call themselves a kennel. A large share of what appears in listings is resale. Dogs moved from a producer to a broker to a website by someone who has never met the mother.

That is the environment. The good news is that it is genuinely easy to test, because the things a real breeder can do instantly are the things a re-seller cannot do at all.

The Single Best Test

"Can you send me a video of the puppy with its mother, recorded today, with my name written on a piece of paper in shot?"

Thirty seconds of a breeder's time, once. Impossible for a broker. There is no litter to film and no dam to film it with, and footage lifted from someone else's website will not have your name in it. Stock photographs prove nothing; a dated video of that specific puppy with its mother proves almost everything.

Note what this asks and what it does not. It does not ask a breeder to drop everything for a live call every time somebody browses. That is unreasonable, and no working kennel with a litter on the floor can sustain it. It asks for one short recording, on request, that only a genuine breeder can produce.

If you do only one thing from this page, do this one. Hesitation, excuses or a rescheduling loop is your answer.

The Seven Questions

1. "What health screening did the parents have?" Should name hips, elbows and cardiac, with records following within the hour. "They're healthy" is not an answer.
2. "Who is the sire, and how many litters has the dam had?" A breeder answers instantly by name. A re-seller pauses.
3. "How old will the puppy be when it leaves?" Eight weeks minimum. Anyone offering six weeks is either ignorant or indifferent.
4. "Can I read the contract and health guarantee before paying?" Both should arrive by email the same day.
5. "What happens if I can't keep the dog in three years?" The right answer is "bring it back to me."
6. "Can I visit, or speak to previous buyers?" Neither is always practical; both should be offered rather than deflected.
7. "What are this puppy's faults?" The most revealing question on the list. Every puppy has some. A breeder who says "none" is selling; one who says "he's the pushiest of the litter and he'll need a firm hand" knows the dog.

Scam Patterns to Recognise

• Will not send a dated video. The definitive signal. Stock photos are free to steal, a video with your name in it is not.
• The price drops when you hesitate. Real breeders have waiting lists.
• Gift cards, crypto or wire transfer only. All irreversible, that is the point.
• Fees appearing after the deposit. Crate fee, then insurance, then customs. The standard escalation.
• Stock photography. Reverse image search before sending anything.
• Several breeds on one site. That is a broker, not a program.
• "Papers are being processed." They are not.
• Pressure. "Two other people are interested tonight" is a tactic.
• No address, no landline, no kennel name.

What a Reputable Breeder Looks Like

The row people overlook is "questions for you". A breeder who does not ask about your home, your family, your other dogs and your experience is not screening buyers. Which tells you what they care about.

Papers Are Not Proof of Anything Except Ancestry

Worth repeating because it causes so much confusion: registration records ancestry. It says nothing about health, temperament or how the puppy was raised. A fully papered puppy from unscreened parents carries exactly the same risk as an unpapered one.
