Weight Is Not the Measure: Frame Is

The most common mistake with this breed is treating weight as an achievement. It is not; it is a consequence of frame plus condition, and only one of those is desirable.

A structurally correct 110 lb XL is a better dog than a 135 lb one carrying 25 lbs of fat, and it will outlive it. Height and bone determine what a dog should weigh; anything above that is not size, it is load on the joints.

How to Tell if the Weight Is Right

CheckIdealOverweight
RibsEasily felt under thin coverNeed firm pressure to find
Waist from aboveVisible narrowing behind the ribsStraight or bulging outline
Tuck from the sideSlight upward tuck at the abdomenLevel or sagging
Spine and hipsFelt, not seenCannot be felt
MovementFree and easyRolling, tires quickly, pants at rest

The rib check is the reliable one. Heavy musculature hides fat in this breed better than in almost any other, which is why so many bullies are quietly overweight while looking impressive. Use your hands, not your eyes.

Why Overweight Matters More Here

Excess weight is the single largest modifiable factor in the breed's lifespan. On a dog already carrying heavy bone and a wide front, it accelerates hip and elbow disease, strains a heart already working hard, and makes the breed's poor heat tolerance considerably worse.

An overweight bully in an August heatwave is at genuine risk, not merely uncomfortable.

Weight Claims in Listings

Kennels advertise "150 lb potential" routinely. Treat it as marketing:

  • No one can predict adult weight from an eight-week-old puppy with any precision
  • Adult size depends on genetics the breeder does not fully control and on feeding they will not be doing
  • A specific weight guarantee is not a claim anyone can honour
  • Chasing a number is how dogs end up over-fed during growth, which damages the joints they need to carry it

An honest breeder gives you a range based on the parents' adult sizes and tells you the number depends on you. See XXL American Bully for sale and XL vs XXL.

FAQ

American Bully Weight Chart — Frequently Asked Questions

How much should an adult American Bully weigh?

By class: micro 25–40 lbs, pocket 40–60, classic 55–75, standard 65–85, XL 90–130, XXL 120–160. Females run 10–15% lighter than males.

How do I know if my American Bully is overweight?

Feel the ribs. If you need firm pressure to find them, the dog is overweight. You should also see a waist from above and a slight tuck from the side. Muscle hides fat in this breed, so use your hands rather than your eyes.

Is a heavier American Bully better?

No. Weight beyond what the frame supports is fat, not substance, and it accelerates joint disease and heat intolerance. A sound 110 lb XL is a better dog than an overweight 135 lb one.

Can a breeder guarantee adult weight?

No. Adult weight depends on genetics no breeder fully controls and on feeding they will not be doing. A range based on the parents is honest; a specific guaranteed number is a sales tactic.

Honest Ranges, Not Weight Promises

We will tell you the parents' adult sizes and what a puppy is likely to finish at. As a range, because that is the only honest answer. Straightforward pricing, Raised in our home, vet examined before leaving., written guarantee.
