American Bully Feeding Guide — How Much, By Age and Weight
This American Bully feeding guide answers the "how much" question that the diet guide deliberately leaves alone. Portions below are starting points. Body condition is what you actually adjust to, and bag guidelines are consistently generous. See our available puppies.

Meal Frequency by Age
| Age | Meals per day | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 8–12 weeks | 4 | Small stomach, high energy demand |
| 3–6 months | 3 | Steady growth phase |
| 6–12 months | 2 | Growth slowing. Easy to overfeed here |
| 12 months+ | 2 | Two meals for life, not one |
Two meals for an adult rather than one is a deliberate recommendation: this is a deep-chested breed, and large single meals raise bloat risk.
Daily Portions by Puppy Weight
Based on a typical large-breed puppy kibble at around 380 kcal/cup. Check your own bag. Energy density varies by 20% or more between brands.
| Puppy weight | Daily amount | Split across |
|---|---|---|
| 10 lbs | 1–1¼ cups | 4 meals |
| 20 lbs | 1¾–2¼ cups | 3–4 meals |
| 30 lbs | 2¼–2¾ cups | 3 meals |
| 40 lbs | 2¾–3¼ cups | 3 meals |
| 50 lbs | 3¼–3¾ cups | 2–3 meals |
| 70 lbs | 4–4½ cups | 2 meals |
| 90 lbs | 4¾–5½ cups | 2 meals |
Daily Portions for Adults by Class
| Class | Adult weight | Daily amount | Adjust for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | 25–40 lbs | 1½–2 cups | Very easy to overfeed |
| 40–60 lbs | 2–2¾ cups | Activity level | |
| Classic | 55–75 lbs | 2½–3¼ cups | Higher stamina, may need more |
| Standard | 65–85 lbs | 2¾–3½ cups | Body condition |
| XL | 90–130 lbs | 3½–5 cups | Keep lean. Joints |
| XXL | 120–160 lbs | 4½–6 cups | Keep lean — joints |
Adjust down for a neutered or sedentary dog, up for a very active one. Then ignore all of it in favour of what the dog actually looks like.
Body Condition Scoring: The Real Guide
| Score | What you feel and see | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Ribs, spine and hips visible; no fat cover | Increase 10–15%, check for parasites |
| Ideal | Ribs easily felt under thin cover; waist visible from above; slight tuck from the side | No change |
| Slightly over | Ribs need pressure to feel; waist barely visible | Reduce 10% |
| Overweight | Ribs hard to feel; no waist; broad from above | Reduce 20%, add walking, see your vet |
This breed hides weight under heavy musculature, so the hands-on check matters far more than the eye. Run your palms firmly along both sides of the ribcage. If you have to press to find ribs, the dog is carrying too much.
Feeding a Growing Puppy: The One Rule
Keep it lean. It feels wrong when you have bought a dog for its substance, and it is the most valuable thing you can do for its joints. Rapid growth in a large-breed puppy is associated with hip and elbow dysplasia, and the damage does not reverse.
A slightly lean puppy that grows steadily will end up the same adult size as one pushed hard, just with better joints. See the growth chart for target weights by age.
Bloat: Worth Knowing
Gastric dilatation-volvulus is an emergency and deep-chested breeds are at raised risk. Reduce it by feeding two smaller meals rather than one large one, avoiding hard exercise for an hour either side of eating, and using a slow-feeder bowl for a fast eater.
Signs: unproductive retching, a visibly swollen and hard abdomen, restlessness, drooling, obvious distress. This is a same-hour emergency, not a wait-and-see. Know where your nearest out-of-hours vet is before you need it.
This guide is written from a decade of breeding experience and is general information, not veterinary advice. Anything specific to your dog belongs with your own vet, who can actually examine it.
American Bully Feeding Guide — Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I feed my American Bully?
Roughly 2¾–3½ cups a day for an adult standard, 3½–5 for an XL, split into two meals. Then adjust to body condition. You should feel ribs easily under a thin layer.
How many times a day should an American Bully eat?
Four meals at 8–12 weeks, three to six months, then two a day for life. Two meals rather than one reduces bloat risk in a deep-chested breed.
Is my American Bully overweight?
Run your hands along the ribs. If you have to press to feel them, yes. Muscle hides fat in this breed, so the hands-on check is far more reliable than looking.
Should I free-feed my American Bully?
No. Measured meals let you control growth rate, spot appetite changes early, and reduce bloat risk. Free-feeding a food-motivated large breed reliably produces an overweight dog.
