They shed less than a double-coated breed and more than people expect from a dog with visibly short hair. The single coat means no seasonal "blowing" of undercoat, instead a steady, constant loss.
Why Short-Haired Dogs Still Shed
Shedding is about the hair growth cycle, not hair length. Every hair grows, rests and falls out regardless of how long it gets. A short-coated dog simply loses shorter hairs, more or less continuously.
Those short, fine, stiff hairs are in some ways worse than long ones. They weave into fabric rather than sitting on top of it, which makes them harder to vacuum out of a sofa or a car seat.
Managing It
- Rubber curry brush weekly. The most effective tool for a short single coat by a wide margin. It lifts loose hair the way a bristle brush does not
- Grooming mitt daily during heavier periods; takes two minutes

- Washable covers on the furniture the dog actually uses
- Vacuum with a motorised brush head: suction alone will not pull short hairs out of fabric
When Shedding Is a Problem
A sudden increase, or hair loss in patches rather than evenly, is not normal shedding. Look for a vet's opinion if you see:
- Bald patches or clear thinning in defined areas
- Red, flaky or irritated skin under the loss
- Excessive scratching alongside the shedding
- A dull, brittle coat
- Symmetrical hair loss on both flanks. This pattern suggests a hormonal cause

Is There a Non-Shedding Bully?
No. Every American Bully sheds, in every color and every class. Nothing in the breed is hypoallergenic. And worth knowing, allergy to dogs is generally a reaction to dander and saliva proteins rather than to hair, so even a genuinely low-shedding breed is not a guarantee for an allergic person.
If shedding is a serious constraint, be honest with yourself about it before buying rather than after. It is a manageable nuisance, not a hidden problem, but it is constant.
