The Three Types

Start by ruling out fleas properly. Three months of rigorous prevention on every animal in the house. A single flea bite can drive weeks of itching in a sensitised dog, and no amount of food-changing will fix it.

Signs of Allergy

• Persistent licking or chewing of paws, often the first sign
• Rubbing the face on furniture or carpet
• Recurring ear infections (a very strong indicator, especially of food allergy)
• Red, inflamed skin in the armpits, groin or belly
• Rust-colored staining on white fur where the dog licks
• Hair loss from repeated chewing
• Restlessness or scratching that disrupts sleep

Food Allergy, and the Elimination Diet

The proteins most often implicated in dogs are beef, chicken and dairy: not grains, despite the marketing. Grain allergy exists but is comparatively uncommon.

There is no reliable blood or saliva test for food allergy. Any product claiming to identify food allergies from a hair or saliva sample is not evidence-based. The only dependable method is an elimination diet:

1. Choose a novel or hydrolysed protein: something the dog has never eaten, or a prescription hydrolysed diet from your vet
2. Feed it exclusively for 8–12 weeks. Nothing else at all. No treats, no table scraps, no flavoured medication, no chews
3. Assess. If the itching resolves, food was involved
4. Reintroduce one protein at a time, two weeks each, to find the trigger

The reason elimination diets usually fail is step two. One flavoured treat from a visitor resets the whole trial. Tell everyone in the household.

Environmental Allergy (Atopy)

Reaction to pollens, dust mites, mould or grasses. Typically appears between six months and three years, often seasonally at first and then year-round as the dog becomes more sensitised.

It cannot be cured, only managed, but management is generally effective:

• Wipe paws and belly after walks in pollen season, simple and genuinely helpful
• Omega-3 supplementation reduces inflammation over weeks, not days
• Modern prescription medications control itch well and are far safer long-term than steroids
• Immunotherapy after allergy testing. Slow to work but addresses the underlying sensitivity
• Regular bathing physically removes allergens from the coat

What Does Not Work

• Switching foods repeatedly. Without a controlled trial you learn nothing, and you use up the novel proteins you will need later.
• Grain-free by default. Grains are uncommon allergens; the protein is the usual culprit.
• Hair and saliva allergy tests. Not supported by evidence.
• Long-term steroids as a first resort. Effective short-term, real side effects over time. Discuss alternatives with your vet.

When to See a Vet

Any itching persisting more than two weeks, any ear infection, any broken or bleeding skin, or any itching that disrupts the dog's sleep. Allergies get worse when left, because scratching causes secondary infection which causes more itching.
