American Bully Diet — What to Feed and Why
Getting the American Bully food question right matters more in this breed than most, for two reasons: they grow fast enough that overfeeding damages joints, and they are prone to food-responsive skin problems. This guide covers what to feed and why. For portions, see our feeding guide; for choosing a product, the best dog food guide.

What an American Bully Actually Needs
| Nutrient | Puppy target | Adult target | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protein | 26–30% | 22–28% | Muscle maintenance on a heavily built dog |
| Fat | 14–18% | 12–16% | Energy and coat condition |
| Calcium | 1.0–1.5% | 0.8–1.2% | Critical: excess damages growing joints |
| Phosphorus | 0.8–1.2% | 0.6–1.0% | Must stay balanced against calcium |
| Omega-3 | 0.4%+ | 0.4%+ | Skin, coat and joint inflammation |
| Fibre | 3–5% | 3–5% | Digestion |
The line to pay attention to is calcium. Excess calcium during growth is one of the few dietary mistakes that causes permanent skeletal damage in large breeds. Which is exactly why a large-breed puppy formula exists and why you should not supplement it.
Feeding by Life Stage
8 weeks to 6 months
Large-breed puppy formula, three meals a day. Keep the puppy lean, you should feel ribs easily. This is counter-intuitive when you have bought a dog for its substance, but fast growth on soft joints is the single most damaging thing you can do to a bully in its first year.
6 to 12 months
Down to two meals a day. Still on large-breed puppy formula. Growth slows and it becomes easier to overfeed without noticing.
12 to 24 months
Transition to adult food over 7–10 days. XL and XXL dogs can stay on puppy formula slightly longer. Ask your vet, since it depends on how far along the growth plates are.
Adult
Two meals a day, portioned to body condition rather than to the bag's chart. Bag guidelines are consistently generous.
Senior (7+)
Slightly lower fat, joint support, same protein. Do not cut protein in an older dog, muscle loss accelerates without it.
Wet, Dry, Raw or Home-Cooked?
| Approach | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Dry kibble | Convenient, balanced, cheapest, good for teeth | Quality varies enormously by brand |
| Wet food | Palatable, hydrating | Expensive at this size, worse for teeth |
| Raw | Some owners report better coat and stool | Bacterial risk, hard to balance, costly, needs research |
| Home-cooked | Full control of ingredients | Very easy to get wrong without a formulated recipe |
For most owners, a good large-breed kibble is the right answer. If you go raw or home-cooked, work from a properly formulated recipe rather than improvising. A growing large-breed dog is the worst possible candidate for an unbalanced diet.
Foods to Avoid
- Toxic: grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, macadamia nuts, alcohol
- Common skin triggers in this breed: chicken and beef are the two most frequently implicated proteins. See American Bully allergies.
- Cooked bones: they splinter
- Excess treats: keep them under 10% of daily calories, which is less than most people think
Keeping a Bully Lean
Body condition, not the number on the scales, is what matters. Run your hands along the ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat and muscle. You should see a waist from above and a slight tuck from the side.
This breed carries excess weight extremely well. Heavy musculature hides it — which is why so many bullies are quietly overweight. Excess weight is the single largest modifiable factor in the breed's lifespan and it accelerates every joint problem in our health guide.
This guide is written from a decade of breeding experience and is general information, not veterinary advice. Anything specific to your dog belongs with your own vet, who can actually examine it.
American Bully Diet — Frequently Asked Questions
What should I feed my American Bully?
A quality large-breed formula with 22–28% protein and 12–16% fat for an adult, or a large-breed puppy formula at 26–30% protein while growing. Controlled calcium is the critical part for a growing dog.
How often should an American Bully eat?
Three meals a day to six months, two thereafter for life. Two meals is better than one for a deep-chested breed, it reduces bloat risk.
Can American Bullies eat raw?
Yes, but it needs to be properly formulated rather than improvised. A growing large-breed puppy on an unbalanced raw diet can suffer permanent skeletal damage. Work from a vet-reviewed recipe.
Why is my American Bully always hungry?
Most are. It is a food-motivated breed and appetite is a poor guide to portion size. Feed to body condition. Ribs easily felt, visible waist — not to how convincingly the dog asks.
